Robert Burns Ellisland Museum & Farm
About
Little changed since 1788, Ellisland Farm is where the international anthem to friendship, Auld Lang Syne, was written. The farmstead was built by Scotland’s National Bard Robert Burns, as his romantic first home with young wife Jean Armour. Ellisland is the place to fall in love with Burns and is considered his most authentic surviving domicile. He produced a quarter of his life’s work here including the epic masterpiece, Tam o Shanter and songs like My Heart’s in the Highlands and Bonnie Doon. Visit the room in which he wrote these works and discover more about farm life in rural Dumfriesshire in the late 18th century. Along with the historic house and displays you can also explore the farmyard, farm buildings, orchard and take a walk along the River Nith to enjoy the tranquility, woodlands and perhaps spot some of the wildlife that Burns loved.
