The Tall Ship Glenlee
About
The Tall Ship Glenlee is a steel‑hulled, three‑masted barque that began life as a cargo ship in 1896. After several name changes, she served as a training vessel for the Spanish Navy under the name Galatea before being rescued from scrapping in 1993 and returned to Glasgow. Today she is one of only five Clydebuilt steel sailing ships still afloat, and the only example of her type in the United Kingdom. Restored to her original rigging and interior, the museum invites visitors to walk the decks, explore the galley, and peer into the cargo holds that once carried goods from the Cape of Good Hope to Australia. The ship’s long history and remarkable preservation provide a tangible link to maritime heritage, making it a must‑see for history lovers, maritime enthusiasts, and families alike. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, interactive exhibitions, and seasonal events at the Queens Quay Riverside Museum. A café and souvenir shop add to the full day experience, while the free‑access policy allows anyone to board the ship during open hours. The Tall Ship Glenlee offers a unique blend of engineering, nautical history, and family‑friendly storytelling, making it a standout attraction in Glasgow’s cultural scene.
