Ripley Castle and Gardens
About
Ripley Castle is a stunning Grade I listed country house perched on a hill overlooking the Vale of Ripon in North Yorkshire. Its origins date back to the 14th century, and the building evolved through the 18 th century when the Ingilby family added a stately Georgian wing, a western tower, and an elegant orangery. The estate is surrounded by formal gardens, a walled kitchen garden and a well‑kept park – all of which are open to the public free of charge. Visitors can wander through the castle grounds and admire a collection of historic outbuildings, including the 17th‑century brewhouse, dairy and stables that are themselves listed structures. While guided tours of the interior were previously offered, the castle’s sale in 2024 has temporarily suspended those visits; however, the gardens remain a popular spot for leisurely strolls and family picnics. The combination of medieval architecture, Georgian elegance and lush horticulture makes the property a rare blend of heritage and natural beauty, attracting both history buffs and casual visitors to the North of England.
