About

Following the untimely death of David Bowie in January 2016, music club Friars Aylesbury started a petition to celebrate David Bowie's connection with the town. Bowie performed the world premiers of two of the most iconic albums of the 20th century 'Hunky Dory' (25 Sept 71) and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars (29Jan72) at Friars Aylesbury. He formed the Spiders from Mars in the Friars dressing room and referenced Aylesbury Market Square in the song 'Five Years'. Throughout 2016 and 2017 Sue and David Stopps raised over £200K from Bowie fans all over the world to create a statue which would be called Earthly Messenger. The statue was created by sculptor Andrew Sinclair and unveiled on 25 March 2018 by local heroes Howard Jones and Steve Hogarth (Marillion). A Bowie track is played at random above the statue from 9.00am to 9.00pm every day. Earthly Messenger remains the world's first and only statue of David Bowie and is a must-see if visiting Aylesbury.
