City Varieties Music Hall
About
Leeds City Varieties is a Grade II* listed Victorian music hall located on Swan Street in the historic centre of Leeds, West Yorkshire. Built in 1865 by architect George Smith as an extension to the White Swan inn, it has long been a celebrated venue for live entertainment, ranging from comedy and variety shows to pantomime, music concerts and stand‑up comedy. The theatre, steeped in local heritage, has hosted iconic performers such as Charlie Chaplin, Marie Lloyd and Houdini, and for over three decades was home to the BBC television programme "The Good Old Days". After a period of refurbishment from 2009 to 2011, the hall now seats 467, featuring a long rectangular auditorium, cast‑iron columns, a three‑centred proscenium arch and two brass‑trimmed balconies. Visitors can experience the authentic Victorian atmosphere, historic craftsmanship and excellent acoustics that have made Leeds City Varieties a beloved cultural landmark for over 150 years.
