30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin)
About
The Gherkin (30 St Mary Axe) is a striking neo‑futuristic skyscraper that has become one of London’s most recognizable landmarks. Designed by Foster + Partners and completed in 2004, its rounded glass façade, lightweight steel skin and unique “lens‑shaped” crown set a new standard for high‑rise architecture in the City. Although it is primarily an office building, the tower offers a public bar on the 40th floor and a restaurant on the 39th floor, providing visitors with panoramic views of the skyline. The building’s interior showcases an innovative ventilation system that uses shafts of double‑glazed windows to circulate air, improving energy efficiency while creating a distinctive, airy office environment. Architecture enthusiasts, business professionals and those interested in contemporary design will find the Gherkin a fascinating study in form, function and engineering.
