Crossbones Graveyard & Garden of Remembrance
About
Crossbones Graveyard is the Graveyard of the Outcast Dead - among them immigrants, the ordinary working poor, infants, sex-workers. With over 15,000 people having been buried in this tiny space, and since we only know the names of a few of them, we honour and remember the dead with our wild planting style, our many shrines and community events. This is a remaining tiny sanctuary in London- run in the shadows of the surrounding towerblocks. This place is where we honour the dead, the forgotten, the down-trodden. The best-known group among the outcasts are the sex-workers, or Winchester Geese. So named for medieval sex-workers were taxed by the bishop of Winchester. We're open as often as we can be - we need 2 volunteers to open - so do check the opening times. There is a vigil outside Crossbones at 7pm on the 23rd of each month - to honour the outcast dead and living. It is one of London's rare unique remaining traditions and well worth a visit.
