About

London Mithraeum, housed within Bloomberg’s new European headquarters, brings the ancient Roman sanctuary of Mithras back to its original site beneath the City of London. The 3rd‑century altar, discovered in 1954 during construction work, was carefully dismantled, stored, and reassembled over the next decade before being relocated in 2017 to a purpose‑built exhibition space at 12 Walbrook. Visitors walk through one‑third‑scale replicas of the vaulted shrine, surrounded by artifacts uncovered from the original excavation—including bronze, marble, and glass objects—and contemporary artworks by local and international artists that contextualise the temple’s mythology. Admission is free, and the site is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Sunday afternoons only from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. A brief visit of around 30 minutes is recommended, though a slower pace may be taken to fully absorb the intertwined history of Roman London and the contemporary interpretation of Mithraic lore.
