About

Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, affectionately known as the Mon & Brec, is a 36‑mile waterway that winds through the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales. Its history dates back to the early nineteenth century when two independent canals – the Monmouthshire and the Brecknock & Abergavenny – were linked at Pontymoile in 1812, creating a vital industrial artery that once transported coal, limestone and iron ore. Today the canal has been reclaimed for leisure, offering tranquil towpaths for walkers and cyclists, a network of historic lime kilns, bustling canal side pubs and cafés, and a rich array of wildlife that attracts bird‑watchers and nature lovers alike. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks such as the Cefn Flight of fourteen locks, the dramatic Brecon Basin, the picturesque Llangynidr locks and the historic Goytre Wharf – complete with working lime kilns that date back to the 17th century. Canoe and kayak hire, guided tours and boat cruises are popular activities, while the Taff Trail – a 55‑mile route that starts at Brecon Basin and ends in Cardiff – runs along the northern stretch of the canal. The canal also serves as a gateway to the world‑heritage site of Blaenavon and the surrounding heaths, offering panoramic views of the Usk Valley, rare plant species and steep cliffs. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an avid cyclist, a family on holiday, or simply seeking a peaceful walk by water, the Mon & Brec delivers a memorable experience steeped in the natural beauty and industrial heritage of South Wales.
