The Oriental Museum, part of Durham University, is a world‑class destination for lovers of Asian art and archaeology. Founded in 1960 to support the university’s School of Oriental Studies, the museum has grown from a small room in Hatfield College to a purpose‑built gallery at Elvet Hill House, showcasing more than 23,500 objects from China, Egypt, Korea, India, Japan and the wider Far East. Many of its collections are designated by the Arts Council England as of national or international importance, featuring remarkable pieces such as Chinese ceramics from the Zhou and Qing dynasties, Egyptian funerary masks, and a rare Moon rock display that once captivated thousands. The museum offers free admission to all visitors, allowing unrestricted access to its rich tapestry of historical artifacts and exhibitions that illuminate the cultural heritage of Asia.
