Kirroughtree – nestled in the heart of Galloway Forest Park – is a celebrated destination for mountain bikers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Managed by Forestry and Land Scotland, the forest surrounds the charming village of Newton Stewart and offers an impressive network of trails that satisfy riders from novice to expert. The park gained fame as one of the seven sites of the 7stanes project, where each trail is highlighted by a distinctive stone sculpture. Among these, the 1.75‑tonne Gem Stane created by Gordon Young and the towering McMoab granite outcrop—named after the famous Utah riding area—stand out as cultural and geological landmarks. A modern trail centre, complete with a restaurant, bike shop, and hire facilities, combines convenience with the rustic beauty of the surroundings. Beyond cycling, Kirroughtree is a haven for wildlife. Red squirrels, deer, ospreys, and diverse flora thrive under its canopy, while the lochs and streams support popular fishing for brown trout and pike. The forest also forms a segment of National Cycle Route 7, offering seamless long‑distance rides across the Scottish Borders.
