Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway
About
The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (W&LLR) is a narrow‑gauge heritage line that winds through the picturesque Mid‑Wales countryside, spanning 8.5 mi between Llanfair Caereinion and Welshpool. Opened in 1903 and restored in the 1960s, the railway offers a nostalgic steam experience powered by original and international locomotives. Visitors can enjoy regular weekend services, seasonal special trains such as **Santa Specials** and **Christmas Afternoon Tea Hamper Trains**, as well as themed events like Vintage Weekends. **Santa Specials** run from 6 December to 23 December 2025, taking passengers on a 50‑minute journey to meet Father Christmas and receive a gift. Adult tickets are £28, children 2‑15 years £20, infants under 2 £5. **Christmas Afternoon Tea Hamper Trains** depart on 6, 13 and 20 December at 15:15, offering a one‑hour steam journey with a festive picnic hamper. Prices start at £55 per person (£110 for two, £165 for three, £220 for four), with optional Prosecco or local ale add‑ons available for £6 per adult. The line’s heritage steam trains explore beautiful valleys, viaducts and river crossings, passing through farms, woodlands and wildlife habitats. The journey offers striking views of the middle‑second‑stage 2ft 6in gauge line, dating back to the Great Western ownership. The railway is operated by a registered charity with a dedicated volunteer base and a small paid staff team. All tickets can be purchased online in advance to guarantee a seat, especially during peak periods. The railway welcomes families, history enthusiasts and train lovers of all ages, providing a unique and immersive experience of historic rail travel across Mid‑Wales.
