About

Founded in 1249 by Walter Suffield, Bishop of Norwich, the Great Hospital, nestled in the Cathedral Quarter of the city, is a historic and unique site that still provides sheltered housing for people in need 775 years later. The site includes a total of 15 listed buildings including the only surviving ‘swan pit’ in the UK. Monthly tours are led by an excellent tour guide and you can learn about the fascinating history while seeing inside some of our heritage buildings, including the Eagle Ward, painted with more than 200 eagles in honour of Anne of Bohemia.
