Elvaston Castle and Country Park
About
Nestled just south of Derby and north of Nottingham, Elvaston Castle Country Park spans 321 acres of parkland, woodland and formal gardens, offering a tranquil countryside escape for visitors of all ages. The park’s centerpiece is the remarkable Elvaston Castle, a Gothic‑Revival mansion that, although not open to the public, stands as a striking architectural landmark overlooking the estate. Designed by James Wyatt in the early 19th century, the castle was built for the third Earl of Harrington and remains a testament to the area’s rich heritage. The gardens at Elvaston are a showcase of 19th‑century landscape design. Woodland and meadow paths, rock‑worked terraces, and elaborate topiary were all laid out by the celebrated gardener William Barron. Visitors can wander past the Moorish‑style temple and the gleaming Golden Gates, both of which add a touch of exotic flair to the pastoral scenery. Beyond the manicured grounds, the park offers a wide range of outdoor activities. There are miles of walking and cycling routes, designated horse‑riding paths, bird‑watching hides, picnic spots and plenty of open space for kite flying and family picnics. Entry to the park is free at all points of entry, while a single season ticket – valid for two vehicles – can be purchased for £120 to provide convenient access across Derbyshire’s country parks. With its blend of natural beauty, historic architecture and recreational options, Elvaston Castle Country Park provides a versatile destination for day‑trippers, families, history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
