St. Michael At The North Gate
About
The Saxon tower of St. Michael in the North Gate is the oldest surviving stone building in Oxford, which formed part of the town's defences in the eleventh century. It is worth a visit for its historical value as well as a great view over the city of Oxford. It is 97 steps to the top of our tower, but don’t worry – they are wide steps and not very steep. There are also some interesting things to view on the way up, so you can stop and rest for a bit. The church itself is also well worth a visit, boasting medieval stained glass and a rare space of calm and prayerfulness in the city centre. The church free to visit, and all are welcome, whether to pray, think, read or look around. *To note: Shop and tower access is limited during lunchtime hours (Monday-Sunday) and when church services are on.
