Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways
About
The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways form a charming heritage railway corridor that winds through the heart of Snowdonia, linking the slate‑mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog with the port of Porthmadog and the historic market town of Caernarfon. Operated by the Festiniog Railway Company, the network offers a 40‑kilometre journey that traverses rolling moorlands, mist‑shrouded valleys and the spectacular Aberglaslyn Pass – a route voted the most beautiful spot in the UK by the National Trust. Visitors aboard one of the company’s meticulously restored steam or modern diesel locomotives experience a living museum, complete with period‑era carriages, a tea room at Gelert’s Farm, and the intimate Grade‑II‑listed harbour station in Porthmadog. The heritage railways boast a diverse rolling‑stock collection that includes the world’s oldest operating steam engine, Prince (1882), as well as a fleet of classic Fairlie and Baldwin locomotives. The stations, such as the dramatic Rhyd Ddu and the quaint Peninsula‑style Pen‑y‑Mount terminus, are preserved with authentic Victorian signage and brass fittings. A separate, 1‑mile Welsh Highland Heritage Railway branch links Tremadog Road to Pen‑y‑Mount, offering a concentrated glimpse of early narrow‑gauge technology and a miniature railway for children. Beyond the picturesque scenery, the railways provide guided tours, seasonal special services, and an annual “Steam 150” event that celebrates the company’s 150‑year legacy of steam travel. The combines a family‑friendly atmosphere with a spirited heritage club that encourages volunteers to maintain locomotives, carriages, and infrastructure, safeguarding the rich railway history of North Wales for future generations.
