White Horse of Kilburn
About
The White Horse of Kilburn is a monumental limestone hill figure that stretches 314 ft across the face of Roulston Scar, making it Britain’s largest of its kind by surface area. Carved in 1857 by a team of thirty‑one volunteers led by local schoolmaster John Hodgson, the figure originally required lime washes and now uses chalk chippings from the Yorkshire Wolds to maintain its dazzling white appearance. Accessible to all, the site is free to enter and offers a rewarding 1‑hour walk from the Sutton Bank car park, complete with stunning panoramic views of the Hambleton Hills. Visitors can enjoy the vast open space, explore the nearby visitor centre, and feel the sense of historic pride that the hill figure embodies.
