South Cliff Italian Gardens
About
South Cliff Gardens is a historic park in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England, stretching along the Esplanade and the front of the town’s iconic Cliff Bridge. Incorporated into the Scarborough Spa area in the early 19th century, it now comprises several linked gardens – the Spa Gardens, Prince of Wales Gardens, Rose Garden, Holbeck Gardens, Shuttleworth Gardens, and the Italian Gardens – each with its own distinctive character and historic features. The gardens have evolved through centuries of development: from George Knowles’ original drainage and landscaping of the Spa Gardens in the 1830s, to Joseph Paxton’s Italian‑style layout for the Irish Hall, to Harry W. Smith’s 1914 shelter in the Italian Gardens. In 1957 the Scarborough Borough Council took over the gardens, abolishing entrance charges. A recent £7 million restoration, completed in 2023 with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and local fundraising, refreshed historic structures, cleared erosion, opened a new playground and rebuilt a tunnel under the South Cliff Lift. Visitors can experience a range of historic and natural highlights: the Swiss Chalet built by Paxton, the surviving Holbeck Clock Tower donated in 1911, the Victorian beach huts and café, and the neatly kept Italian Gardens. The park’s Grade II listed status protects these cultural treasures, making South Cliff Gardens a must‑visit for history enthusiasts, garden lovers and families alike, and a celebrated venue for community events, concerts, and volunteer activities.
