About
The Chesterfield Canal winds 46 mi from the River Trent to the heart of Chesterfield, linking Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Renowned for its picturesque countryside, early staircase locks and an underground canal at Hollingwood, the canal offers a tranquil escape for walkers, bikers and boating enthusiasts alike. The Trust sponsors a restored 12 mi of towpath, including the historic Tapton Lock Visitor Centre and the dramatic Turnerwood Flight of Locks. With plans for a £310 million Waterside development, the canal’s heritage is being preserved while new opportunities for leisure and tourism emerge.
