Southampton Town Walls
About
Southampton Town Walls are a magnificent reminder of the city's medieval past. Stretching roughly 2 kilometres (about 1.25 miles) in length, the walls enclose a substantial part of the historic centre and boast a total of 29 towers and eight surviving gatehouses. Visitors can walk along the remaining sections of stonework, taking in panoramic views of the harbour and the surrounding countryside. The walls tell a rich story of defence, trade and community. From the earliest Roman and Anglo‑Saxon fortifications to the Norman and later medieval expansions, the walls witnessed raids, wars and the rise of Southampton as a bustling port. Today the complex is partly preserved as an archaeological museum, with God’s House Tower housing exhibits on the city’s history. Although safety restrictions limit access to some areas, the walk is a rewarding experience for history buffs, architecture lovers and families looking for a scenic stroll with rich heritage context.
