About
Locomotion – Shildon’s iconic railway museum – invites visitors into the birthplace of the railways. The free‑entry museum offers a living collection of more than 90 historic locomotives, wagons and railway artefacts, displayed across panoramic galleries including the new New Hall. The New Hall showcases 47 vehicles across six themed roads, detailing the evolution of freight and passenger freight in the North East. Visitors can also explore historic buildings – the former Thomas Hackworth workshop, the Coal Drops, and the Soho House – along with landscaped gardens that celebrate local biodiversity. With family‑friendly in‑house café, extensive shop and learning resources, Locomotion delivers an engaging experience for families, history enthusiasts and train lovers alike.
