Forde Abbey & Gardens
About
Forde Abbey & Gardens is a 900‑year‑old former Cistercian monastery turned historic house and award‑winning gardens, set on 30 acres of lush lawns, topiary paths, a vibrant tulip display and a spectacular fountain—the tallest in England. Visitors can wander through the beautifully restored cloisters, marvel at the Mortlake tapestries, and stroll along the historic Great Pond, which feeds a series of cascading water features. The estate’s meticulously curated gardens, including a bog, kitchen, and seasonal flower beds, offer a sensory experience that blends heritage with contemporary landscape design. Open each winter from Wednesday to Sunday between 10:30 am and 4:00 pm (the house remains closed during this period). Entrance is only required for the gardens; a free visitor pass allows access to the Museum and the Old Cottage. Ticket prices start at £3 for children aged 5–15, £10 for adults, and are waived for children under five, while members and disabled visitors receive a discounted rate of £7.50. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, history lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Forde Abbey offers family‑friendly walks, guided tours, and cozy tea rooms, making it a must‑visit destination for all ages.
