Dartmouth Castle
About
Dartmouth Castle is a Grade I‑listed artillery fort that has watched over the entrance to Dartmouth Harbour for more than six centuries. Built in the 1380s, the site features a 15th‑century gun tower and the remnants of an older chapel, later expanded with the Royal Navy’s Grand Battery in the 18th century. Today, the castle is managed by English Heritage and offers an engaging mix of interactive displays—most notably an audio‑and‑light show that recreates a heavy‑gun crew in action—and hands‑on experiences that allow visitors, particularly families, to touch historic weapons. Guests can climb the Gun Tower for sweeping views across the Dart, explore the intricate passageways that trace the fort’s defensive history, and learn about the long‑lasting harbour chain that once bound the harbour to protect against French attack. A scenic boat trip from the town quay provides the best water‑side perspective of the castle, while the surrounding coastal walk invites visitors to soak up the rugged Devon shoreline. The castle welcomes the public daily from 10 am to 4 pm, with ticket purchase available online or at the on‑site ticket office. Children up to 17 years receive free entry when accompanied by an adult, making the site a popular destination for families and young history enthusiasts alike.
