Wordsworth House and Garden
About
Wordsworth House and Garden is a beautifully preserved 18th‑century Georgian townhouse in Cockermouth, Cumbria, where the poet William Wordsworth spent his childhood. The house is presented as it would have looked in the 1770s, with period furnishings, a cosy kitchen fire, and guided tours that bring the poet’s life into vivid detail. Adjacent to the house is a riverside garden bursting with 18th‑century vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers that grow along the River Derwent, offering a fragrant, seasonal backdrop to the historic setting. A modest bookshop featuring biographies, literary works, craft books and a children’s section extends the educational experience, making the site ideal for families, history lovers and literary fans alike. The property remains closed for winter conservation work but reopens on Monday 30 March each year, with visiting hours from 10:00 to 16:30 during the open season.
