Montacute House
About
Montacute House is a majestic Elizabethan Renaissance masterpiece situated on the rolling hills of Somerset. The house, built in 1601 by Sir Edward Phelips, boasts magnificent glass leaded walls, a soaring hammerbeam roof and an impressive hall filled with period furniture and artwork. While the upper floors are currently closed for restoration, the grand ground floor remains open, offering visitors a glimpse into the life of a 17th‑century English country house. Beyond the house itself, the surrounding gardens, parkland and estate provide a rich tapestry of Tudor‑style horticulture, including yew hedges, orchards and a lime avenue that render the grounds a visual delight. Guests can also explore the lovely Porters' Lodges, the scenic Prospect Tower with its panoramic views, and the diverse shop and café located in the former service buildings. Montacute offers a mix of architectural splendor, historical depth, and natural beauty, making it a top destination for families, history enthusiasts and garden lovers alike.
