For an interesting day out visit Aldborough Roman site, Isurium Brigantum. Thought to be among the northern most urban centres in the Roman Empire. Aldborough was the ‘capital’ of the Romanised Brigantes, the largest tribe in Britain. One corner of these Yorkshire defences is laid out amid a Victorian arboretum, and two mosaic pavements can be viewed in their original positions. The site’s fascinating museum has an outstanding collection of Roman finds. Don't miss the on-site museum and uncover 1,800 years of history, the two fantastic Roman mosaics, Roman and post Roman archaeological finds and a section of the original town wall. Join the local friends group 'Friends of Roman Aldborough' on the first Sunday of every month for a free tour at 11am and 2pm, subject to site admission. The site open weekends 10am - 6pm April to October and weekends 10am - 5pm October to 4th November, the site is also open on Bank holidays during the summer months. November to April Closed.
